In this article, I will be tackling the very controversial topic of joining the workforce, while also having a disability. Having a disability is not something new. We see people who are disabled, every single day. The stigma against disabled people is actually slowly disappearing. I personally do not understand discriminating against individuals who have disabilities, because it is not like they chose to have the disability. As a community, we should make sure we do everything we can to help people who are disabled. That is why, there are a lot of companies out there who will actually hire individuals who are disabled what was certain jobs that they can still do.

Disabled

Having a disability does not mean that the person is completely incapacitated or useless. They can still have a set of skills that will help them make a little money here and there.

There are people out there who have become millionaires while also having certain disabilities. There is nothing that you cannot accomplish in this world, if you put your mind toward it.

  1. Firstly, you need to make sure that you review the disability policies of the companies that you are applying to. It is essential that you do this. You need to make sure that the company that you are applying to will make sure to facilitate you and your disability, and also, you need to make sure that they don’t harass you based on your disability. If you know someone who is disabled and if they are applying for a job, you need to make sure that you help them out with the job search and make sure that they are not falling into a trap. I will explain what I mean in this very simple example. There are some people who need a wheelchair to move around, because of their disability. There need to be ramps where people can make use of their wheelchairs so that they can get around, and these ramps must be present wherever there are stairs. This will be one of the best ways to facilitate disabled individuals.

Disablity

  1. Secondly, you need to ask for assistance from the human resources department of whichever company that you are applying to. When you go for an interview, they will obviously ask about your disabilities. When you tell them, you need to ask what their policy is and how you will be assisted in the company. If you do not need assistance, you should let them know. You should be completely transparent as to your expectations of your salary, how are you need to be facilitated and assisted because of your disability and more. Once the human resource department gets back to you, you can make a decision.
