Yes! It is fully possible for you to join back the workforce, while also having a disability. There are a lot of companies out there who actually know what they are doing when it comes to assisting people who have a disability. Having a disability is not exactly the end of the world for you. It doesn’t mean your life is over. You can still lead a full life, while also being disabled. That is why there are so many companies out there that have a lot of policies, especially when it comes to assisting and facilitating disabled employees.
In this article, I will be talking about what you should consider, especially before joining the workforce. There are a couple of things that you need to think about and a couple of things that you need to consult with your family members and friends.
- Firstly, you need to update your resume, if your disability is new. Meaning, if it is an incident that happened recently, you need to update your resume. If your disability is from birth, it needs to be mentioned on the resume, so that the company that you are applying to knows exactly what they can do to facilitate and assist you. Being completely transparent about your disability will actually help you in the long run. For example, you can get perks like parking close to the building, being able to use special restrooms, being entitled to certain special treatments and more. These are not things that are facilitated to go out of pity, but things that are offered to you as a part of the company policy.
- Secondly, you need to maintain all of your disability benefits. You should not feel bad about using the benefits that are offered to you. Those benefits exist for a reason. That is why you are fully entitled to make use of those benefits.
- Thirdly, you need to ask yourself if you are ready to join the workforce. You need to sit down and actually have a conversation with yourself about what you can do and what you cannot do, especially when it comes to what kind of job you are going to be entering. You need to consider the job, and you need to consider your disability and see if they are compatible and if it can work out in the long run.
- You should also consider that working part-time is a really good option for you. Especially if you are in countries like the United Kingdom or the United States of America, there are a lot of provisions for people who have disabilities, and they also have the option of working part-time and still being able to enjoy certain benefits.
